Canto-pop as Autography
My Way (Cantonese version) by Hins Cheung
I will find my way, I want a different way
我那用去歎氣
(ngo5 na5 jong6 heoi3 taan3 hei3)
(I don't need to sign)
高溫載我起飛
(Gou1 wan1 zoi3 ngo5 hei2 fei1)
(I'll fly in high temperature)
我那用去歎氣
(ngo5 na5 jong6 heoi3 taan3 hei3)
(I don't need to sign)
高溫載我起飛
(Gou1 wan1 zoi3 ngo5 hei2 fei1)
(I'll fly in high temperature)
Implication
The song is autographical. Hins Cheung was born and raised in Guangzhou (i.e. Canton), and came to Hong Kong to pursue his
dream for a possible singing career. The English lines at the beginning of the chorus declares his determination and faith towards the hurdles ahead. It is likely that the English lines "I will find my way, I want a different way." symbolized the perseverance and a “self-assertive” identity of the singer. Here, English does not symbolize a “Westerner” identity but deviance – a refusal to succumb to pressure and challenges. (Lee 2004)
